Ignite the Spark of Equality in Seoul's Vibrant Streets

The Seoul Queer Culture Festival has been held annually since 2000, making it one of Asia's longest-running Pride events — and one of its most contested. Each year, tens of thousands of participants and allies take to the streets of central Seoul while organised counter-protests gather nearby, making the march a genuine act of visibility in a country where same-sex relationships have no legal recognition. That tension is part of what makes it one of the most significant Pride events on the continent.

Frequently asked questions

Seoul has a visible queer scene, centred primarily around Itaewon and the Jongno district, where most LGBTQ+-friendly bars and venues are located. Homosexuality is legal in South Korea, but same-sex relationships have no legal recognition and public displays of affection may attract unwanted attention outside queer-specific spaces. Within Itaewon and during Pride season, the atmosphere is welcoming and the community is active and organised.

The Seoul Queer Culture Festival (SQCF) is South Korea's largest LGBTQ+ event, held annually since 2000. It typically runs for one to two weeks in late May or early June and culminates in the Seoul Queer Parade, the headline event which draws upwards of 150,000 participants and allies. The festival also includes the Korea Queer Film Festival, cultural programming, and community booths. It is one of the largest Pride events in Asia.

The parade route and exact location have shifted over the years depending on permits and city authority decisions, central Seoul locations including areas near City Hall and Euljiro have been used in recent editions. The festival organisers confirm the final route and gathering point each year via their official channels at sqcf.org. Checking closer to the event date is advisable.

Itaewon is the most practical base for LGBTQ+ travellers. It is the heart of Seoul's queer nightlife scene, close to Homo Hill (the informal name for the cluster of gay bars near Itaewon Station Exit 2), and within easy reach of central Seoul where the parade takes place. Myeongdong is a good alternative if you want easy access to sightseeing and shopping alongside the festival.

Seoul is served by Incheon International Airport (ICN), one of Asia's major hubs with direct connections from the UK, US, Europe, and across Asia. The airport is connected to the city centre by the AREX express train, which takes approximately 43 minutes to Seoul Station. Gimpo Airport (GMP) handles some regional and domestic routes and is closer to the city.
