Celebrate Nice Pride (Pink Parade): Where the Riviera Goes Rainbow

Nice Pride, officially known as the Pink Parade, is one of France's most distinctive LGBTQ+ celebrations: a march down the Promenade des Anglais with the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the Belle Époque grandeur of the Côte d'Azur on the other. There is genuinely nowhere else in the world where you can march for equality along one of Europe's most iconic seafront boulevards in the height of summer, and that setting gives Nice Pride a character all of its own.

Organised since 2004 by AGLAE (Association Gay et Lesbienne pour l'Égalité), the Pink Parade is not just a celebration. It's a march for visibility, a call for ongoing rights, and a community event that punches above its weight for a city of Nice's size. The event advocates for issues including blood donation equality, workplace protections, and full recognition of LGBTQIA+ families, meaning the party always has purpose behind it.

For international travellers who know it as Nice Pride rather than the Pink Parade, it's worth knowing this is the same event. The "Pink Parade" name is local; the visibility and impact are very much global.

Witness the Spectacle:

  • Pink Parade March: The parade sets off from Place Île de BeautĂŠ at the Port of Nice in the afternoon, moving through the harbour streets before hitting the Promenade des Anglais for its final stretch. Expect floats, DJ sets pumping from sound systems, drag artists, community organisations, and thousands of people dressed with genuine imagination. The march along the Promenade is genuinely spectacular: sea on one side, the colourful sweep of the city on the other, summer sun overhead.
  • Pink Party at ThÊâtre de Verdure: Once the parade wraps, the after-party begins at the ThÊâtre de Verdure, an open-air venue nestled in the Jardin Albert 1er between Place MassĂŠna and the Promenade. Free to attend (with donations welcomed to keep it that way), the Pink Party features live DJs, performers, and dancing under the stars. It's the beating heart of the evening and where the community really comes together. The party is self-funded, so a small donation at the door is very much in the spirit of what the event stands for.
  • Pride Weekend Parties: Across the weekend, Nice's bars and clubs host their own Pride programming. Venues including Le Six, Le Glam, and L'OmĂŠga run special DJ nights, drag showcases, and themed parties that extend Pride across the full weekend. Tickets for some of these sell out in advance, so check listings once the full programme is confirmed.

Beyond the Parade:

  • Lou Queernaval: Nice has one of the most intriguing LGBTQ+ calendars of any French city outside Paris. The Lou Queernaval, a queer edition of Nice's world-famous Carnival held in late winter, has drawn crowds of over 15,000 in recent years, with DJs, drag artists, and costumed celebration on the same streets that become home to the Pink Parade in summer.
  • In&Out Film Festival: The CĂ´te d'Azur's dedicated queer film festival brings international screenings, discussions, and cultural events to Nice annually. It's an excellent reason to visit outside Pride season and a reminder that the LGBTQ+ cultural calendar here runs beyond a single weekend.
  • The Promenade des Anglais: Even outside Pride, Nice's legendary 7km seafront boulevard deserves an afternoon. The Promenade connects the city from the airport to the old port, passing iconic hotels including the Negresco with its pink dome. Hiring a bike and cycling its length is one of the great simple pleasures of any visit.
  • Vieux Nice and Cours Saleya Market: The baroque old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets, coloured facades, and excellent food markets. The Cours Saleya flower and food market is genuinely unmissable. It transforms into one of the best outdoor dining spots in the city by evening.

Uncover the Nice's Welcoming Embrace:

  • Rue Bonaparte and the Gay Scene: Nice's queer nightlife doesn't have a concentrated gay village in the same way Paris has Le Marais, but Rue Bonaparte in Vieux Nice has emerged as the de facto gay strip, with bars, cafĂŠs, and LGBTQ+-owned venues clustered along its rainbow-painted stretch. Le Six is one of the longest-running gay bars in the city, known for DJ nights and a lively crowd. Le Glam runs drag and pop nights from Thursday to Sunday. Red KafĂŠ is the place for an early evening aperitif, with drag performances at weekends and a welcoming daily crowd from late afternoon.
  • The MusĂŠe Matisse: Henri Matisse spent much of his life in Nice, drawn by the quality of the Mediterranean light, and the museum in the Cimiez neighbourhood holds one of the world's great collections of his work. It's a short bus ride from the city centre and sits within the beautiful olive-grove gardens of the Villa des Arènes.
  • MusĂŠe National Marc Chagall: A short walk downhill from the Matisse Museum, the Chagall Museum houses his major Biblical Message series, seventeen large-scale canvases that need to be seen in person to understand their scale and intensity. One of the best art museums in the south of France, and consistently underrated by visitors who make a beeline for Matisse first.
  • Day Trips from Nice: Nice's position on the Riviera makes it an exceptional base. Monaco is twenty minutes east by train. Cannes is forty minutes west. The hilltop village of Èze sits between them with views that stop you in your tracks. All are easy day trips that add genuine depth to a Pride travel weekend.

Frequently asked questions

Nice is broadly welcoming for LGBTQ+ visitors. The city centre, Vieux Nice, Rue Bonaparte, and the Promenade des Anglais are all areas where LGBTQ+ couples move around comfortably and visibly. The queer scene is relaxed and mixed, with a strong local community that has been active since the early 2000s. As with any city, attitudes can vary in residential outer areas, but serious incidents are uncommon and Pride weekend itself is extremely well attended and openly celebratory.

Nice Pride (Pink Parade) has been running since 2004 and is the main LGBTQ+ Pride event on the Côte d'Azur. Organised by AGLAE, recent editions have attracted between 8,000 and tens of thousands of participants, with the numbers growing year on year. The parade is followed by the free Pink Party at ThÊâtre de Verdure, and the weekend's club nights extend the celebration across multiple venues throughout the city. Nice also holds other LGBTQ+ events throughout the year, including Lou Queernaval in winter and the In&Out Film Festival.

The parade starts at Place Île de Beauté at the Port of Nice, moving through the harbour streets via Quai Papacino and Quai Lunel before reaching the Promenade des Anglais, which it follows to the Théâtre de Verdure. The Promenade stretch is the visual centrepiece of the march. The after-party at Théâtre de Verdure continues from early evening. The best areas to stay are Vieux Nice, the Port area, and around Rue Bonaparte for direct access to both the parade and the nightlife.

Vieux Nice and the Port neighbourhood are the best bases for Pride weekend, placing you within walking distance of the parade start, the after-party venue, and the gay bar scene. The Promenade des Anglais hotels offer the most iconic setting but tend to come with higher prices; booking well in advance is strongly advisable as Nice's summer season sees demand across the board. July is peak Riviera season regardless of Pride, so rates are high and availability tightens quickly.

Nice CĂ´te d'Azur Airport (NCE) is France's third busiest airport, well connected from across the UK, Europe, and beyond, with direct services from most major cities. It sits just 7km from the city centre. Tram Line 2 connects the airport directly to the centre in around 20 to 25 minutes and is the easiest and most affordable option. Nice is also accessible by TGV from Paris in around 5.5 hours, and the city's train station connects to the regional network serving Cannes, Monaco, and the rest of the Riviera. Once in the city, most Pride locations are walkable or a short tram ride apart.
